Community Roots members offer their yards for cultivation or buy a 20-week share of the group’s CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), it’s $400 for a regular share or $550 to supply a large family. The share is mostly vegetables, but also includes some fruit and flowers. The regular share, which feeds two to three people, comes cost roughly $20 a week, according to Nash.
Those who offer their yards for cultivation pay about $230 to have their yards dug up and for soil amendments and testing. In turn, Community Roots members plant, weed and harvest the crop. Landowners do not buy a share in the CSA, but do pay for water, up to $40. If the bill is higher, Community Roots pays the difference. Those unable to afford the full CSA price can work 15 hours during the season to reduce the cost. About half the produce goes to the CSA, and the remainder is sold at the Saturday Boulder County Farmers’ Market.
